„Socio-economic and geographic perspectives on heritage. Heritage studies in the Central and Eastern European context”

The broad and interdisciplinary discourse on cultural heritage which has developed intensively in the past few decades and involves active participation of representatives of many social sciences, including geographers, is at the same time global and context specific. As follows, the proposed theme issue will revolve around the topic of heritage, its perceptions, transformations, interpretation and uses in the particular context of Central and Eastern Europe. What interesting, innovative ways of benefiting from and interpreting heritage may be observed in this part of the continent in recent years? Who are the key stakeholders in terms of activating heritage and its reassessment as a contemporary development resource? How and in what ways is heritage integrated into broader strategies of organisational, institutional, local or regional development in both urban and rural settings? What is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on heritage-related activities and its uses? Last but not least, what (innovative) research methods may be applied to assess the potential of heritage as a socio-economic asset?

We invite all interested researchers to join in the scientific discussion on the above issues and submit papers to the theme issue.

Themes and topics undertaken by article authors within the framework of the issue include (but are not limited to):

• Transformations, perception and interpretations of historic urban landscape(s);
• Contemporary uses and interpretations of material heritage and their spatial consequences;
• Contemporary uses and interpretations of immaterial (intangible) heritage and their spatial consequences;
• Heritage and diverse branches of the creative industries;
• Heritage and identity;
• Heritage, social participation and social capital;
• Issues of heritagization, heritage acceptance and heritage dissonance;
• Ethnic, religious- and linguistic diversity in heritage politics and management;
• Practices of cross-border and/or regional heritage co-operation and management;
• Functioning of heritage institutions (museums, archives, libraries);
• The role and impact of various heritage stakeholders on heritage;
• Innovative methods of research in heritage studies.

Deadline for full submitting full papers in line with publication guidelines of the Geographic Works (Prace Geograficzne) journal: 15.09.2021.

After review, papers submitted to the theme issue will be published in the 2021 edition of the journal.

Language of publication: papers may be submitted in English or Polish, authors who wish to have their texts published in English are responsible for delivering a professionally edited English-language version of the text to the editorial office.
